Summary

Summer is a physician scientist (MD/PhD) trainee who is broadly interested in developmental neurobiology and stem cell technologies.

She began her research career as an undergraduate at The Ohio State University, where she studied autonomic nervous system development and dysautonomia under the mentorship of Jose Otero, MD, PhD.

After completing her undergraduate education, she received an NIH trainee award to pursue a unique post-baccalaureate experience at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, IL under the mentorship of Aaron Hamvas, MD. There, her work aimed to improve the care for medically complex patients with autonomic nervous system disorders, including preterm infants.

Summer then went on to work with Mark Hester, PhD at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, where she investigated the pathogenesis of various neurodevelopmental diseases with human cerebral organoids and other in-vitro models.Now, as a member of the Yeo Lab, Summer hopes to advance our mechanistic understanding of RBP function in normal and diseased human brain development.

Outside of the lab, Summer enjoys rewatching ‘90s sitcoms, trying new plant-based recipes, practicing reformer pilates, and convincing herself she can DIY any home renovation project.
