Dr. Kevin Rhine

ALSA Postdoctoral Fellow

2022

Summary

Kevin received his B.A. in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and M.A. in Biotechnology from Boston University in 2017. His undergraduate and Master's research was with Dr. Dean R. Tolan, and he discovered that the enzyme aldolase could simultaneously bind to cytoskeletal proteins and engage in glycolysis. He then earned his Ph.D in Biology with Dr. Sua Myong at Johns Hopkins University. Kevin's graduate research focused on the RNA binding protein FUS, and how FUS condensates were nucleated, regulated, and disassembled. A major part of his Ph.D work was on how ALS-linked mutations in FUS altered the physical properties of FUS condensates. Kevin joined Dr. Gene Yeo's lab in 2022, and his postdoc research focuses on how aging impacts the RNA and protein interactions of ALS proteins in motor neurons, especially in the context of aggregation and liquid-liquid phase separation. Outside of lab, Kevin enjoys playing tennis and golf, baking sweets, and taking care of his houseplants and cat.
