Alex Monell

Graduate Student (Ph.D.)

Bioinformatics and Systems Biology

Summary

Alex is a PhD student in the Bioinformatics and Systems Biology (BISB) at UC San Diego. He received a B.S. in Bioengineering: Bioinformatics from UCSD in 2022. As an undergraduate, he worked in the laboratories of Dr. Bing Ren and Dr. Bogdan Bintu, where he wrote software for the analysis of high-throughput spatial transcriptomics data. He also worked as an AI scientist at the startup Dermose, using scalp biomarkers to predict the response to hair loss drugs.

Co-mentored by Dr. Gene Yeo and Dr. Ananda Goldrath, Alex is interested in developing spatial transcriptomics technologies to investigate the roles of RNA binding proteins in immunology.

Outside of the lab, Alex enjoys playing basketball, coding, and eating food.
